JOHOR PORT INVESTS RM140 MILLION IN LIQUID JETTY EXPANSION, STRENGTHENING POSITION AS THE SOUTHERN GATEWAY MULTI-PURPOSE PORT
PASIR GUDANG, 29 July 2025 – Johor Port Berhad (Johor Port), a member of MMC Group, proudly marked a major milestone with the official unveiling of its newly expanded liquid jetty facilities. The launch ceremony was officiated by Tuan Mohd Masni Wakiman, District Officer of Johor Bahru, as the representative of Menteri Besar Johor, symbolising a significant leap forward in Johor Port’s vision to become a premier hub for liquid bulk cargo in Southeast Asia.
This strategic RM140 million jetty expansion which began on 2 October 2023 involved the construction of two additional liquid jetties specifically engineered to accommodate vessels of up to 120,000 DWT. Purpose-built to meet the growing demand for larger edible liquid bulk carriers, the new jetties significantly increases Johor Port’s handling capacity and efficiency – reinforcing its integral role in driving regional trade and economic development as the Southern Gateway Multi-Purpose Port.
The facilities have been developed primarily to support the operations of Johor Port’s valued customers who play an important role in the edible oil and liquid bulk sector. This expansion is expected to further boost Johor Port’s overall throughput for liquid cargo, enhancing service delivery and strengthening long-term customer partnerships.
Johor Port has recorded strong liquid cargo volumes over the past five years, peaking at 14.5 million tonnes in 2022 and already nearing its maximum annual handling capacity of 15.0 million tonnes. The construction of the two additional liquid jetties is set to boost the port’s handling capacity by a further 5.0 million tonnes per annum, strengthening its position as a key liquid bulk hub in the region.
Strategically positioned at the eastern end of the existing BT6 and BT8 jetties, the new facilities were developed with a firm emphasis on safety, environmental responsibility, and engineering excellence. The project adhered to high Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) standards as outlined by Johor Port and Jabatan Laut Malaysia. Extensive site studies, including hydraulic modelling and navigation simulations, ensured seamless integration with existing operations while maintaining optimum service continuity throughout the development phase.
Full compliance with the rigorous standards set by both Johor Port and Jabatan Laut Malaysia was maintained throughout the construction phase.
“The commissioning of this expanded liquid jetties marks a transformative chapter in Johor Port’s journey of innovation and also our commitment to strategic infrastructure development and sustainable growth. This development not only expands our operational capabilities but also strengthens our ability to support our key partners. It positions Johor Port as a future-ready maritime gateway, aligned with the aspirations of Johor and the broader region to elevate port infrastructure to global standards,” said Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh, Chairman of Johor Port Berhad.
“This enhancement not only enables us to cater to the increasing demand for larger liquid bulk carriers but also solidifies our position as a resilient and forward-looking maritime gateway, crucial for supporting the economic vitality of Johor and the broader Southeast Asian region,” added Md Derick Basir, Chief Executive Officer of Johor Port Berhad.
The new jetties are equipped with an array of advanced features including a dedicated operations room and integrated CCTV surveillance; robust fire-fighting systems and foundational infrastructure to support Class 3 cargo with adaptability for future Class 1 requirements. Further modern amenities include comprehensive Wi-Fi connectivity; a dedicated oil boom deployment area; optimised night operation lighting; a pipe rack accommodating 25 pipelines; and a modern loading platform complete with oil sumps, emergency showers and a marine crane.
The expansion project was successfully concluded in Quarter 2 of 2025, achieving all key objectives within the targeted timeframe. This infrastructure achievement underscores Johor Port’s unwavering dedication to operational excellence, safety and continuous innovation; and solidifying the port’s position as the Southern Gateway Multi-Purpose Port. With this latest enhancement, Johor Port reaffirms its dedication to supporting Malaysia’s maritime aspirations, facilitating trade flows across key markets, and serving as a resilient logistics hub for the nation and the ASEAN region.
