Penang Port Commences 50-tonne Tugboat Operation, Equipped With Shore Power Technology

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 5 (Bernama) — Penang Port Sdn Bhd has commenced the operation of “PM Satu”, a next-generation, 50-ton tugboat designed to bridge the gap between high-performance industrial needs and environmental responsibility.

In a statement, it said the tugboat arrived at Penang’s shores on Jan 29, 2026, and commenced full operations on Feb 1, 2026, marking a significant milestone in PPSB’s sustainability journey.

The company said the tugboat is equipped with shore power capability, allowing it to connect directly to the shore power supply while eliminating the need for diesel-powered auxiliary engines during idling, significantly reducing emissions and fuel consumption.

“The arrival of PM Satu boosts our fleet’s bollard pull capacity to 50tonnes, marking an 11 per cent increase from our previous standard of 45 tonnes, and addresses the global trend of larger, upsized cargo vessels.

“With increased capacity, we are now able to handle bigger container vessels, bulk carriers and tankers with better manoeuvring support and safety,” it said.

Meanwhile, the company said PM Satu extends its reach through ship-to-ship services for Andaman Port Sdn Bhd.

It said the partnership involves supporting their oil and gas transfers, enhancing Penang Port’s position as a reliable gateway for the northern region.

“By working together, we contribute to regional growth and encourage smoother maritime operations for the entire industry,” it said.
