Dato’ Mohamed Rafique Merican was appointed as an Independent Non-Executive Director on 22 April 2025. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Audit Committee and is also a member of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee.
Dato’ Mohamed Rafique Merican is a Fellow Member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (“ACCA”), a Chartered Accountant with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants, and had also attended the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School.
Dato’ Mohamed Rafique Merican brings over 30 years of experience in banking, financial services, power, facilities management, and property development. He began his career in corporate advisory at Bumiputra Merchant Bankers Berhad and has since held leadership roles at Landmarks Berhad, Taiping Consolidated Berhad, Amanah Capital Partners Berhad, Malakoff Berhad, Radicare (M) Sdn Bhd, Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Malayan Banking Berhad.
Dato’ Mohamed Rafique Merican joined Malayan Banking Berhad (“Maybank”) in 2012 as Group Chief Financial Officer, following his resignation from TNB, where he had served as Chief Financial Officer for three (3) years. In 2016, he was appointed Group Head of Islamic Banking and Chief Executive Officer of Maybank Islamic Berhad, where he was responsible for the planning, strategy and overall performance of the Maybank Group’s Islamic Banking business. He was redesignated as an Adviser in March 2024 prior to his retirement in June 2024.
Dato’ Mohamed Rafique Merican has served on various Boards of Directors and industry bodies, including Maybank Islamic Asset Management Sdn Bhd, Etiqa General and Family Takaful Berhad, and PT Bank Maybank Syariah Indonesia (as President Commissioner). He had also served as Chairman of the Islamic Banking and Finance Institute Malaysia, Vice President of the Association of Islamic Banking and Financial Institutions Malaysia (“AIBIM”), and as a member of the Malaysian Accounting Standards Board.
