JOHOR PORT CHANGES THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN LAW ENFORCEMENT
JOHOR BAHRU, 21 April 2021 –Traditionally, law enforcement is a male-dominated profession. Johor Port Berhad (Johor Port), a member of MMC Group is committed to addressing this imbalance by employing women to be part of their own Auxiliary Police force.
At Johor Port, its armed security force known as the Johor Port Auxiliary Police is responsible to ensure utmost protection from any potential threats whether by land, sea or air. They are the primary responders for all reported crimes and incidents within their jurisdiction and responsibility to safeguard and serve the port’s community by preventing crime and disorder and dealing effectively with any incidents and disruption, and at the same time adding value to the customer experience at this Southern Gateway Multi-Purpose Port.
The Johor Port Auxiliary Police force comprises of a team of 85 officers and members, of which five (5) of them are women. The work of both policemen and policewomen is the same regardless of their gender; in which they are authorised to carry firearms and provide patrolling and 24-hour surveillance at all entry and exit points to the various facilities within the port as well as enforcing both port and maritime safety regulations at the Johor Port’s waterfront.
Md Derick Basir, Chief Executive Officer of Johor Port explained “At Johor Port, we believe strongly in gender equality. We have women at all levels of our organisation. And for our Johor Port Auxiliary Police, we have ensured that all appointed female Auxiliary Police are given the same opportunities for career development, as their male colleagues.”
He continued to state that these female Auxiliary Police are also able to offer other unique sets of skills. For example, a female victim would prefer to speak to another female and have female Auxiliary Police at the scene appease the victim and assist in the investigation.
Alongside their male counterparts, the female Johor Port Auxiliary Police have undergone extensive and rigorous police training at the Police Training Centres (PULAPOL) to meet the needs of daily safety-related assignments. In addition, they also undergo various skills training regularly to strengthen their performance and to ensure adequate preparation for the various services and security roles.
One of Johor Port’s ongoing training for their police force is the Bi-Annual Firearms Training programme at the Kota Tinggi REM Farm Shooting Range on 1, 3 and 9 April 2021. Firearms Training is aimed at enhancing the usage of firearms through up-to-date training and improving the level of preparedness when encountering any situation involving firearms usage. The training programme was attended by both male and female Johor Port Auxiliary Police and consisted of a briefing session and practical training on the procedures and safety aspects of handling firearms, followed by ‘Centre Fire’ gun and ‘Falling Plate’ pump-action gun skills training sessions. The weapons used during the training were Glock19 9mm gun type firearms and 12-bore pump guns.
“I am proud to be a policewoman in Johor Port Auxiliary Police, it is challenging and exciting at the same time. Currently, there are only five of us in the force, I hope to see more women come on board and help broaden the demographic of the profession. If this is something you are interested in, go for it and start applying for this role,” said Lance Corporal Azie Azuwa Binti Zainuddin, a female Johor Port Auxiliary Police. She added that in the year 2021, women can do it all – a mother, daughter, sister, role model, and great policewoman.

Ports are the main gateway of a country and an important sector in generating the growth of the national economy. Due to this, the aspect of security at ports should not be taken lightly.
In line with the need to ensure adequate and comprehensive security at ports, the Port Security Force was established as provided under the Port Authorities Act 1963 and this security force was further strengthened by granting police powers to each officer and member who has been appointed as an Auxiliary Police as provided under the Police Act 1967.
This is also in line with the requirements of the Arahan Tetap Sasaran Penting 1990, a national safety and security guideline, where the ports are regarded as a primary source of the nation’s economy and to a certain extent, play a vital role in the functioning of the Government and contributing to the overall image of the nation – hence, it requires the supervision and monitoring of armed security forces. This Security Force is also known as the Port Auxiliary Police.
