PASIR GUDANG, 8 April 2026 – Johor Port Berhad (Johor Port), a subsidiary of MMC Port Holdings Berhad (MMC Ports) and a member of the MMC Group, has taken a bold step in advancing its 2026 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) agenda through a multi-phase Environmental Care Awareness Campaign, transforming everyday textile waste into a meaningful environmental and social impact initiative.
Held between 12 to 18 March 2026, this initiative successfully mobilised the Johor Port community to divert approximately 1,065kg of used textiles and clothing from landfills, proving that collective actions, even through small individual contributions, can drive significant change.
At the heart of the campaign was a simple yet powerful idea, to reimagine waste not as something to discard, but as a resource with untapped value. Through a dedicated collection hub at the Oasis facility within Johor Port, employees were encouraged to contribute pre-loved clothing and textiles, turning a routine act into a purposeful movement.
More than just an environmental effort, the initiative carried a deeper human touch. Carefully selected wearable items will be channelled to underserved communities, offering comfort, dignity and renewed hope, while non-wearable materials will be repurposed into industrial products through recycling processes. This dual-impact approach reflects Johor Port’s commitment to building a circular economy where nothing goes to waste and every contribution matters.
Chief Executive Officer of Johor Port Berhad, Md Derick Basir, emphasised the significance of the initiative stating, “Our ESG journey is not just about meeting targets, it is about creating meaningful impact. This initiative demonstrates how simple actions can collectively reduce environmental burden while uplifting communities. It reflects who we are as an organisation; responsible, compassionate and forward-looking.”
Dato’ Azman Shah Mohd Yusof, Group Chief Executive Officer of MMC Port Holdings Berhad, added, “This initiative reflects MMC Ports Group’s ongoing commitment to embedding ESG principles across its port operations and fostering sustainable, inclusive growth.”
In collaboration with Kloth Malaysia, a leading social enterprise in textile recycling, all collected items will undergo a structured process of sorting and redistribution. From Johor Port Oasis’s hub, the materials are transported to Kloth Malaysia’s collection warehouse in Johor Bahru before being channelled to a specialised fabric recycling factory in Port Klang, where they will transform into industrial wiping cloths, processed fuels and other sustainable materials.
This campaign further strengthens Johor Port’s position as a sustainability-driven organisation embedding responsible practices into its daily operations while fostering a culture of environmental consciousness among its people.
As Johor Port continues to drive its ESG 2026 agenda forward, the success of this initiative stands as a powerful testament to what can be achieved when purpose meets action where waste is no longer the end of a journey, but the beginning of something meaningful.
