NORTHPORT BAGS BEST PORT SAFETY MANAGEMENT AWARD FROM MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT MALAYSIA

PUTRAJAYA, 21 December 2021 – Northport (Malaysia) Bhd (“Northport”), a member of the MMC Group, won the Best Port Safety Management Award for its initiatives in maintaining a high standard of safety and health practices in the workplace, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The award was presented by the Secretary General of Ministry of Transport Malaysia, Datuk Isham bin Ishak during the KiLAT Transport Excellence Award Ceremony at the Ministry of Transport in Putrajaya.

KiLAT Transport Excellence Award Ceremony is an inaugural event organised by the Ministry of Transport Malaysia (“MOT”) to recognise companies and individuals in the Transport and Logistics industry for demonstrating outstanding performance.

In handling the COVID-19 pandemic, Northport has effectively established and implemented its Business Continuity Plan (“BCP”) in ensuring adequate measures are in place to ensure Northport’s operational and business continuity throughout the pandemic. The BCP covers key business operational risk areas such as assets, people and suppliers.

“The BCP comprises of steps to be taken in managing the pandemic such as activation of the Crisis Response Team, terminal land and sea entrance control, contact tracing management, PPE management, activation of split operations mode and alternate sites, communication and awareness as well as disinfection works management”, said Dato’ Azman Shah Mohd Yusof, Chief Executive Officer of Northport.

The BCP has assisted Northport to minimise the safety and health risk to its employees and port users by ensuring adequate plans are in place in the event of virus infection within the terminal, as well as to ensure that alternative arrangements with suppliers and customers are in place for Northport’s business continuity.

As the port sector is categorised under the essential services that continues to operate 24 hours 7 days a week to ensure that the national economy and the movement of goods are not interrupted, Northport collaborated with Lembaga Pelabuhan Kelang (“LPK”), Westports Malaysia Sdn Bhd (“Westports”) and Port Klang Free Zone (“PKFZ”) to organise the first private vaccination programme for the transportation and maritime sector in Malaysia under the Ministry of Transport in June 2021.

Northport’s commitment towards safety and health has been acknowledged in recent years with several recognitions and awards. In April 2019, Northport became the first Malaysian port to be accredited with the ISO 45001:2018 standard. The certification signifies Northport’s commitment to operate its business and activities at the highest level of occupational safety and health management systems across the organization.

The company’s outstanding performance in safety and health earned them prestigious awards, including the Malaysian Society for Occupational Safety and Health (“MSOSH”) Silver Award in 2016 and Gold in 2017 and 2018. In 2020, Northport was awarded the National Occupational Safety and Health Award in the Business Services category for its efforts and commitments in ensuring that the safety, health and welfare of Northport employees in the workplace are protected.
