NORTHPORT SUPPORTS HUMANITARIAN AID TO CHINA IN FIGHT AGAINST COVID-19

PORT KLANG, 24th February 2020 – Northport (Malaysia) Bhd (‘Northport”), a member of MMC Group participated in a humanitarian effort to help fight the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic in Wuhan, China which has been heavily impacted by the fatal disease. The support was made through the provision of warehouse space totaling 8,000 square feet to keep nitrile and latex gloves which were donated by Malaysian companies before they are being shipped out to China from Northport. The need for these protective items is very critical, especially in the affected area of Hubei province in China which is facing depleting supplies.

The effort was initiated by Northport’s business partner, Sinotrans Logistics (M) Sdn Bhd (“Sinotrans”) which arranged the logistics and transportation of the supplies to China. Meanwhile, Kossan Group, Hartalega Group, Careplus Group, Supermax, Brightway, Koon Seng and YTY Group generously donated the supplies. A total of 4 million pieces of nitrile and latex gloves were successfully collected. The first shipment of the supplies left Northport for China on 14 February 2020.

On 13 February 2020, representatives from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and the China Enterprise Chamber of Commerce in Malaysia visited Northport’s warehouse to witness the labeling and wrapping of the supplies. Dato’ Azman Shah Mohd Yusof, Chief Executive Officer of Northport and Mr. Willy Chen, Managing Director of Sinotrans were also present during the visit.

“This initiative is a collective national effort to help battle the COVID-19 outbreak which has infected thousands of people in China. As a caring organisation, Northport jumped on the bandwagon by providing our expertise and facilities, especially on the logistical support for this humanitarian aid.” said Dato’ Azman.

Prior to this, Northport has participated in other humanitarian missions to other countries in need of international assistance including Aceh, Indonesia which was badly hit by the tsunami in 2004 and Rakhine, Myanmar which faced  humanitarian crisis due to ethnic conflict in recent years.

“We will continue to work with our strategic stakeholders to help those in need, both local and international, as an expression of our solidarity and empathy, especially during these difficult times,” added Dato’ Azman.
