BUTTERWORTH, 5 February 2026 – Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) marked a new era in its marine service capabilities with the arrival of PM SATU, a next-generation tugboat designed to bridge the gap between high-performance industrial needs and environmental responsibility. Operated by the contractor, Baiduri Dimensi, PM SATU arrived at Penang’s shores on 29 January 2026 and commenced full operations on 1 February 2026, marking a significant milestone in PPSB’s sustainability journey.
The arrival of PM SATU boosts our fleet’s bollard pull capacity to 50 tonnes, marking an 11% increase from our previous standard of 45 tonnes. This upgrade directly addresses the global trend of larger, upsizing cargo vessels. With increased capacity, we are now able to handle bigger container vessels, bulk carriers and tankers with better manoeuvring support and safety. For our customers, this results in shorter turnaround times, significant savings on port charges, and reduced costly idle time. We are now fully equipped to help our customers optimise their vessels’ time at sea, ensuring that Penang Port remains a swift, cost-efficient hub consistent with continuous improvements in maritime services.
Beyond our own port operations, PM SATU extends its reach through Ship-to-Ship (STS) services for Andaman Port Sdn Bhd. This partnership involves supporting their oil and gas transfers, enhancing Penang Port’s position as a reliable gateway for the northern region. By working together, we contribute to regional growth and encourage smoother maritime operations for the entire industry.
Beyond its mechanical durability, PM SATU emphasises PPSB’s strategic focus on sustainability. The tugboat is equipped with shore power capability, allowing it to connect directly to the shore power supply. This innovation eliminates the need for diesel-powered auxiliary engines while idling, significantly reducing emissions and fuel consumption.
The arrival of PM SATU is more than simply expanding the fleet, it signifies a clear statement of intent. It demonstrates that Penang Port is effectively merging heavy industrial capabilities with clean technology. While we await the arrival of its sister vessel, PM DUA Penang Port continues to lead by providing top-tier, sustainable maritime solutions that support both economic growth and environmental responsibility.
