PTP Eyes 16 mil TEU Annual Capacity with New Berth Development

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 24): The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), a 70:30 joint venture between MMC Corp Bhd and the Netherlands-based APM Terminals, has announced plans to develop a new berth as part of its expansion plan. Known as Berth Zero, the project aims to boost PTP’s total handling capacity to about 16 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) over the next two and a half years, said PTP chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh in a statement on Friday. The busiest transshipment hub in Malaysia, located southwest of Johor, currently has an annual handling capacity of 14 million TEUs. “Demand in the maritime and port industry is strong and continues to grow. Berth Zero marks the next capacity unlock. “We do not stop where we are; we constantly seek room for growth to fulfil our customer-centric philosophy — supporting the evolving needs of our valued customers, whether to meet their reliability goals or enhance their competitiveness — while preparing to capture opportunities from the growing intra-Asean trade that is shaping the future market, and further strengthening Johor’s and Malaysia’s position in global trade flows,” Che Khalib said. According to PTP, the contract for the new berth was awarded to a joint venture between MMC Engineering Sdn Bhd, a whollyowned subsidiary of MMC Corp, and Singapore-based Antara Koh (M) Sdn Bhd through a “transparent and competitive” tender process. The project involves dredging, reclamation and the construction of a 360-metre berth along PTP’s linear wharf. It will be equipped with four quay cranes and a yard designed for electric rubber-tyred gantry (e-RTG) cranes.—TheEdge
