PTP Footprint Optimisation: Ship to Shore Crane Fleet Modernisation

On 27 December 2023, Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP), a member of MMC Group, reached a remarkable milestone of successfully removing and selling 18 Ship to Shore (STS) cranes in just two years. The removal of these units, consisting of the NOELL, ZPMC-A, IMPSA-B and IMPSA-C STS fleets were completed on 6 November 2023, with the crane dismantling work to be carried out off-site by the buyer.

The crane removing work from the quay area to the transport barge was done with intensive planning and coordination involving various divisions such as Project Integration; Operations and Engineering & Facilities; and Health, Safety, Security, Environment & Sustainability Division. With the weight of each crane between 1,250 to 1,800 tonnes, the work was executed with minimal operational disruptions and with the highest safety standards.

The sale of the cranes marks a significant step forward in PTP’s journey to be a world-class port facility through its fleet modernisation initiative, which is part of the Ipsum Magna footprint optimisation programme. Removing these cranes will free up valuable berth space, allowing PTP to handle larger vessels and increase container handling capacities.

With the sale of these older units, PTP procured 10 Super Post Panamax STS cranes, which were delivered in stages between 2022 and 2023. These new STS units have allowed PTP to not only improve its efficiency but also allowing flexibility in coping with the demands of the liners. This strategic approach allowed the terminal to sustain its attractiveness in an increasingly competitive global market.
