KONTENA NASIONAL BERHAD EXPANDS ITS FLEET WITH THE ADDITION OF 30 NEW PRIME MOVERS

Kontena Nasional Berhad received 30 units of Volvo’s FM440 6×2 T RAS prime movers from Volvo Trucks Malaysia in a fleet expansion and modernisation move.

KUALA LUMPUR, 21 January 2016 – Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP), a subsidiary company of MMC Corporation Berhad kicks off the year 2016 with a robust performance by becoming the first Malaysian port to successfully handled more than 18,000 TEUs in a single berthing by a vessel.

The milestone was accomplished on 13 January 2016 when Matz Maersk, one of the vessels on the 2M network service left the port with the record load of 18,034 TEUs. The vessel arrived from Yantian, China to PTP and is now en route via the Suez Canal to Felixstowe then Bremerhaven, Gdansk, Rotterdam before returning to Asia.

Efficient planning and execution of container operations and good optimization of resources were identified as the reasons behind the feat.

PTP Chairman and MMC Group Managing Director, Dato’ Sri Che Khalib bin Mohamad Noh in his statement remarked that the latest achievement is testament to the port’s commitment in providing best in class service for our customers.

“This is a significant milestone to us and is only made possible by the passion and commitment of our employees. We will continue to build and strengthen our performance as well as to provide the best service to meet the demand of our customers and stakeholders”

“Similar to last year, we believe that both Maersk Line and MSC are set to aggressively expand their business this year as the advantages provided by the 2M Alliance will offer greater market options” Che Khalib added.

Meanwhile, despite challenging economic outlook of 2015, PTP has successfully recorded a total of 9.1 million TEUs throughput last year, an increase of 7.0 percent as compared to year 2014.

PTP positive growth was driven by organic growth of its existing customers particularly on the successful deployment of 2M Alliance, world’s largest container shipment collaboration between Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) to PTP.

PTP achieved various milestones throughout 2015 after successfully hitting a record monthly throughput of 800,000 TEUs last August and was also named the winner of Malaysia’s 2014 Best Port Award, in conjunction with the World Maritime Day 2015 National level recently held at Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur.
